Wayne Berndt

February 12, 1943 — May 5, 2012

Wayne F. Berndt, 69, Wahpeton, ND, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012 at his home under the care of Riveredge Hospice and surrounded by his family. The Funeral Service will be Wednesday, May 9, 1:30 PM at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton. Arrangements are with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Wayne was born February 12, 1943 at Breckenridge, MN, the son of Elmer and Martha (Grotluschen) Berndt. He attended Wahpeton schools and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1961. He attended NDSSS, upon graduation he accepted a position with the Fargo Forum as a pressman. On September 29, 1963 he married Judy Brown at United Methodist Church in Breckenridge and the couple resided in Fargo. In 1977 Wayne became disabled and moved to Wahpeton in 1980.

Wayne was an independent and sometimes a stubborn person; characteristics which would help him stay active and involved in his endeavors, despite being a paraplegic. His focus in life was his family, the outdoors and nature. He was an avid wood worker, making many birdhouses and at one time he refurnished old furniture. He also had enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Wayne is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Berndt, Fargo; Leslie (Rock) Ludwick, Fargo; his mother Martha Berndt, Wahpeton; his sister Yvonne (Jim) Merrill, Clarkston, WA; two brothers, Larry (Cheryl) Berndt, and Rick Berndt, both Wahpeton; five grandchildren: Nicole (Daniel) Genz, Ethan Kjelland; Krystal, Mallory, and Clay Ludwick; a great granddaughter, Mahaleia Genz; a great grandson due in May, Jamin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer.
