Vernon Mohs, 86, of Fergus Falls, MN, formerly of Fairmount, ND, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at the Veterans Home in Fergus Falls. Visitation will be Friday, May 24, 2019 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm followed by the funeral service at 4:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, ND. Rev. Sean Daenzer will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton, ND. Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Vernon Alfred Mohs was born July 5, 1932 to Alfred and Meta (Deilke) Mohs, in rural Great Bend, ND. He grew up and attended school at Center #5 in rural Wahpeton, ND, and worked on the family farm. Vernon enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1952, serving in the Korean Conflict until August 18, 1954. After being released from active military service, he transferred to the Army Reserve to complete eight years of service under the Universal Military Training and Service Act. When Vernon returned from the military, he traveled to Salt Lake City, UT, for telegraph training. It was there that he met his wife, Charlotte Sikes. The couple returned to the family farm where they raised their children. In addition to farming, Vernon worked for Wil-Rich Manufacturing as a machinist for 30 years. In May of 1974, he married Marian Bechtel-Hudson. The couple moved to Fairmount, ND, where they raised their blended family. Marian passed away in 2000. Vernon last resided at the Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN.
Vernon loved visits with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in his later years, word finds, watching “Mash” and old western programs. Vernon eventually traded his truck in for a scooter. He drove truck for Darin Prochnow during spring and harvest time until his retirement.
He was a member of American Legion Post 0106 of Fairmount, ND and the VFW in Mantador, ND.
Vernon is survived by his children, Roselyn (Jeff) Schwartz, Wahpeton, Roberta Maurer, Wahpeton, Rita (Charles) Patterson, Sheridan, WY, Robin (Michael) Wright, Portland, OR and Jimmi Ladwig, Laurel, MT; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; his daughter-in-law, Carol Hintz, Tower City, ND; and 6 step-children, along with their families, Donald Hudson, Jenni Bewley, Cyril “Sonny” Hudson, Mona McKibben, Sheila Jeske and Jackie Munter.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte (Sikes) Mohs; second wife, Marian (Bechtel-Hudson) Mohs; his parents, Alfred and Meta Mohs; brother, Herbert Mohs; son, Jody Mohs; grandson, Timothy Ard; great-grandson, Dalton Dutchuk; and 2 step-children, James Hudson and Debbie Milligan.
