Steven Krohn

June 19, 1945 — January 9, 2014

Steven Denis Krohn, 68, Wahpeton, ND, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. The Funeral Service will be Monday, 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service also at the church, and one hour before the service on Monday. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, have been entrusted with the services.

Steve was born on June 19, 1945 in Lancaster, WI, to Harold and Helen Krohn. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist church in Lancaster. He grew up working on the family dairy farm and attended a one-room country school, Pleasant View Elementary. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1963. Steve enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stout that fall, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial technology.

Following graduate school, Steve taught at Bemidji State University for a year before moving to Wahpeton in 1969 to take a job at the North Dakota State School of Science. There he served as the coordinator of the Instructional Resource Center for 40 years. He was also an active photographer; through his business, Krohn's Images, Steve photographed many area weddings and other events.

In 1972 Steve married Judy Woehrmann and the couple built a house on Cottonwood Court in Wahpeton. A son Jake was born in 1979. On June 19, 1993, Steve married Coleen (Mekash) Stauffenecker of Moorhead, MN.

Steve and Coleen made many trips throughout their 20-year marriage, as their photo-filled Christmas cards attest, but the highlight of each year was their annual winter trip to Cozumel, Mexico. While in Cozumel, Steve made numerous scuba dives and returned with many rolls of film (and later, digital memory cards) full of underwater pictures and videos. This year's trip, which was slated for the end of January, would have marked the couple's 20th year in Cozumel.

Steve was also a long-time runner and participated in hundreds of road races throughout his 30-plus years of activity. In retirement he remained active, running and swimming regularly. He also rediscovered his love of golf and played weekly in a summertime senior league with friends.

He is survived by his wife Coleen; a son Jake (Arielle) Krohn, Fergus Falls, MN; three daughters, Tammy (Brian) Blawat, Greenbush, MN, Melony (James) Wicklund, Moorhead, MN and Holly (Cole) Hokana, Ellendale, ND;and one step-son, Patrick McDermott, Baton Rouge, LA. He was a loving grandfather to six (Luc, Eric and Isaac Wicklund, Gus Krohn and Braxton and Mia Hokana), an uncle to ten, and a brother to Jerome (Karen)of Galena, IL and David (Kay) of Madison, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Gary Mekash.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. Donations will be made in memory of Steve.
