Sadie Spear

Sadie was born on April 23, 1914, at Ellendale, ND, to James and Nettie (Cooper) Barton. Sadie was told that at birth she weighed 3 lb. 6 oz. and was kept warm in a shoe box on the oven door of the wood stove. She grew up in the Glover/LaMoure, ND, area. She began working for five dollars a week plus room and board, at the Schmit Ranch in Oakes, ND, and met the love of her life, Arthur Spear, who always called her Sally. They were married in Huron, SD, on November 16, 1935. They farmed at Oakes, ND, until 1937 when they moved to Fairmount, ND, and farmed until they retired in 1979. Art, Sadie and family went south custom combining from 1943 to 1948 and again from 1962 to 1978.

Sadie was first and foremost a helpmate and companion to Art and a loving mother. In addition to being a homemaker, she was parts runner and cook for the farm and combining crew. She also worked at the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center for a few years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairmount and active in the women's group and was an active member of the Senior Citizens. She enjoyed embroidering and crocheting and she especially enjoyed being with family and friends.

She is survived by her children: Arlen (Evelyn) Spear, Fairmount, ND; Loa (George) Bernard, Watertown, SD; Joyce (Glenn) Schoenrock, Janice Springer, and Larry (Phyllis) Spear, all of Fergus Falls, MN; a sister, Luella Steiner, Oregon; 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; an infant son; parents; son-in-law Dale Springer; brothers Earl, Milo, George and Ralph Barton; and sisters Myrtle Hample, Florence Payton and Gladys Hajek.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Fairmount Cemetery Association.
