Later his family moved to Superior, Wisconsin, where Roger graduated from Superior Central High School, on May 28, 1943, which coincidentally, was his 17th birthday. He attended one year of college before being drafted into the army in 1943. He served in the 94th Infantry Division, which landed in Europe in August 1944.

Roger then taught math and chemistry in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, before he accepted the position of dean of men and chemistry teacher at the North Dakota State School of Science (now NDSCS). He continued employment at NDSCS, retiring in 1985.
In 1960 he married Patricia Braseth in Mahnomen, Minnesota. They lived in Wahpeton, where both were on the faculty of Science. Roger was an active member of his church (United Church of Christ-Congregational), served on the school board, and was a member of Rotary. His hobbies included golf, fishing, bowling, woodworking, gardening, and time spent at the cabin on Blanche Lake. He was especially known for the beautiful roses he grew and for always trying the latest variety of vegetables.
