Robert "Bob" W. Smedberg, 82, Wahpeton, ND, passed from this earthly life into the arms of his heavenly Father on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND. The Funeral Service will be Thursday, 11:00 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Dwight, ND, with Rev. Gordon Lee officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5 PM to 7:30 PM, with a 7:30 PM Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be at Homestead Cemetery, rural Wyndmere, North Dakota, at a later date. Military Honors to be conducted by Oie-Wold-Leland American Legion Post No. 282-Galchutt, ND; and North Dakota Military Honor Guard. Arrangements have been entrusted with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Bob was born November, 4, 1931, in Wahpeton, ND, the son of John and Agnes (Syverson) Smedberg. He attended country school in rural Galchutt and worked on the home farm. He entered the US Marine Corps on February of 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954. He returned home and continued to farm in Richland County. He was united in marriage to Mary Alice Susag on September 12, 1959 in Pelican Rapids, MN. In 1980 the family moved to Fargo and in 1987, they moved to Helena, MT, to enjoy the Rocky Mountain life. They returned to his home farm in 1999, to be near family. Bob and Mary also enjoyed their annual winter retreats in Yuma, AZ.
Bob had several hobbies including woodworking, metal work, grill master at large family gatherings, and a passion for old time country and gospel music. He loved people, and met many friends along the highways and byways in his travels.
Bob is survived by his wife Mary, Wahpeton; four daughters: Patti (Randy) Jelinek, Memphis, TN; Jacki (Kevin) Medenwald, Wahpeton; Deanna (Curt) Bohn, Hastings, MN; Dianne Smedberg, Wahpeton; 12 grandchildren: Kelsy, Christian, Caleb, Joshua and Andrew Jelinek, Lindsey (Wade) Nordick, Landon Medenwald, Ashlee Bohn, Alex and Dom Smedberg, Drevaun, and Mikel Moye; his brother Gerald (Johnnie) Smedberg, TX; several nieces and nephews; a special foreign exchange student, Sirpa Turves-Mankila, Finland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Irene Smedberg
