Robert C. Schmitt, 78, Wahpeton, ND, passed away, Monday, January 9, 2012 at his home. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton, with visitation one hour before the service at the church. There will also be visitation Tuesday from 5 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Vigil at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Robert was born December 16, 1933 in Richland County, ND, the son of Henry and Margaret (Dauer) Schmitt. He attended country school near Tyler, ND and worked on the home farm. He served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958 where he was stationed in Germany. After his discharge he returned to North Dakota where he continued to assist in farming before he went to work for the Wahpeton Foundry and D&E Machinery in Wahpeton. Robert was united in marriage to Jeanette West on September 29, 1973 at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton. He worked for over 15 years for 3M, retiring in 1996. They have continued to live in Wahpeton.
Robert was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his wife Jeanette Schmitt, Wahpeton; three children: Terry (Colleen) West, and children, Braden and Cody, of Wahpeton, ND; Randy (Angie) West, and children, Kyle, Melissa, Justin and Jason, Tea, SD; Denise Charette (Steve Martinec) of Harrisburg, SD, children, Jennifer (Clint) Bolton and daughter Lexi of Rapid City, SD, and Ryan Charette, Hartford, SD; his brother-in-law, Al Schreiber, Breckenridge, MN; and his sister-in-law, Linda Schmitt, Detroit Lakes, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bernard Schmitt and his sister Mary Francis Schreiber.
