Phyllis Gylland, 101, of Colfax, passed away, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at St. Catherine's Living Center in Wahpeton. Visitation will take place at Vertin Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, on Friday, February 14, 2025, from 4 PM - 6 PM with a Prayer Service beginning at 6 PM. The family invites friends and family to stay after the Prayer Service for cookies and coffee for a continued time of sharing. Her Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Richland Lutheran Church, Walcott, beginning at 11 AM. Visitation will take place starting at 10 AM. Pastor Franek will officiate.
Phyllis Olive (Hestdalen) Gylland was born on January 9, 1924, at home near Abercrombie, North Dakota to Rudolf and Bernice (Stubson) Hestdalen. She attended school in Abercrombie through her graduation in 1942. Shortly after, she traveled to San Francisco to join her fiancé, Leif Gylland, who was stationed at Hamilton Field. They were married on April 21, 1943, in San Rafael, CA. Following Leif’s discharge from the service, they returned home to begin their lives together farming and raising five children.
Phyllis spent 80 years on the farm creating a warm and loving home for her family. She was an active member of Richland Lutheran Church participating in Women’s Circle, Ladies Aid, WELCA, Book Club, Homemakers, and teaching Sunday School. An avid reader, she read most if not all of the books in her school library, and continued her passion for reading throughout her life, especially historical novels. She was also a talented seamstress, skilled in knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and embroidery. Her family will fondly remember her meals, baked goods, canned vegetables, and fruit. She also loved socializing, dancing, crafts, board games, traveling, and spending time at the cottage on Lake Lida.
Phyllis will be greatly missed by her family, including five children: Vance (Bonita) Gylland, Colfax, ND, their children Karla Gylland and Troy Gylland; Carol Baker, North Oaks, MN, daughter Greta Gylland; Carter (Pamela) Gylland, Colfax, ND, their children Natalie (Josh) Davis and Nicholas (Devon) Gylland; Monte Gylland, Colfax, ND; Kyle (Jennifer) Gylland, Barnesville, MN, their children, Jens (Ingrid) Gylland, Anders (Lara) Gylland, Siri Gylland, and Signe (Tyler) Olson; seven great-grandchildren, Kai Mason, Dona Sepeda, Trent Moe, Lars, Nils, and Solveig Gylland, Quinn Olson, and another great-grandchild due in May.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Leif Gylland, parents Rudolf and Bernice Hestdalen, three sisters and one brother, Evelyn (John) Soljem, Norma (Elmer) Affield, Ardyce (Raymond) Austin and Gordon Hestdalen.
