Oscar Versdahl

Oscar J. Versdahl, 95, Wahpeton, ND, passed away Monday, June 9, 2014 at St. Catherine's Living Center, Wahpeton. The Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM, Friday at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, with Rev. Harvey Henderson officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel and one hour before the service at Friday. Interment will be at Freeman Cemetery, McLeod, ND. Military Honors will be conducted by McLeod VFW Hauge Memorial Post No. 9067 and ND Military Honors Program. Arrangements have been entrusted with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Oscar, the son of Herman and Anna (Ekre) Versdahl, was born September 9, 1918, at the farm home in Helendale Township, ND. In 1923, they moved to Freeman Township and later worked for farmers in the area. He started farming for himself in 1941, working with his Dad.

During World War II he served in the Army Air Force, in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945. Following the war he returned to Freeman Township and farmed. On October 3, 1970 he married Ruth (Lokken) Versdahl of Finley, ND, the widow of his brother Alvin. She was the mother of two sons, Hans and Dennis. Oscar and Ruth lived on the farm that formerly belonged to his parents in Freeman Township. The couple moved into Wahpeton in their retirement in 1996 and moved to the Leach Home in 2006, entering St. Catherine's Living Center in 2009. Ruth passed away September 23, 2010, Oscar continued to reside at St. Catherine's.

Oscar is survived by his grandchildren, Dennis Versdahl II (Bridgett Anderson) Breckenridge, MN; Barry Versdahl, California; Marsha Freyholtz, Hutchinson, MN; and two great grandchildren; and his sister, Helen Charlson, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, two step-sons, Dennis and Hans, his brothers: Alvin, Clifford, Oscar's sisters, Myrtle Johnson and Gladys, and a baby sister who died at birth.
