Mary Podliska

Mary D. Podliska, 93, Lidgerwood, ND, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011 (22 years to the month and day that her husband Ed passed away) at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. The Funeral Mass will be Monday, April 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood with Rev. Robert Smith as celebrant. Visitation will be Sunday, from 5 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM prayer vigil, preceded by a Christian Mothers Rosary at St. Boniface Catholic Church and visitation one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Lidgerwood. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton is in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born August 20, 1917 at Cogswell, ND, the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Even) Hansen. She grew up and attended school in Cogswell where she played basketball, graduating from High School. She attended Ellendale Teachers College where she obtained her teachers certificate and taught schools at Geneseo, Dexter Township and Liberty Grove, all in North Dakota. Mary was united in marriage to Ed Podliska on August 20, 1941 in Cogswell. They lived and farmed on the Podliska home farm. Mary did some substitute teaching and made decorative birthday and wedding cakes. Ed passed away April 8, 1989; Mary continued to live on the farm and continued to stay active. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildrena�(TM)s events and playing cards with her friends.

Mary was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and was a past member of St. Johna�(TM)s Catholic Church until they merged; she taught CCD and CYO. She was also a member of Dexter Homemakers and was treasurer for the District 27 Democratic Party for several years. She loved to watch and listen to sports, particularly basketball and was given the "Cardinal Award" from the school.

Mary is survived by a son and a daughter: Don Podliska, Lidgerwood; Betty (Bob) Veland, Wahpeton, ND; six grandchildren: Rob Veland, New York, NY; Alisha Veland, Fargo; Nick Podliska, Lidgerwood; Sadie (Luke) Siemieniewski, Geneseo, ND; Kellie Podliska and Cassie Podliska, Lidgerwood; and four great grandchildren: Lev Veland, Merari Veland, Kara Dewetta Siemieniewski, and Ava Siemieniewski.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, and her brother and four sisters.
