Marie Schmidt, West Fargo, ND, formerly Wahpeton, ND, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016, at Sheyenne Crossing Care Center, West Fargo. The Funeral Service will be Tuesday, January 3, 2016, at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton, ND, at 11 A.M., with Fr. Dale Lagodinski officiating. Visitation will be Monday, January 2, from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. with a 5 P.M. prayer vigil, and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Marie Pauline Schmidt was born on September 22, 1933, in Nome, North Dakota to John and Luffa (Ronning) Gustafson. She grew up and attended school at Fort Ransom, North Dakota and graduated Class Valedictorian in 1951. On October 20, 1953 she married Francis C. Schmidt at St. Adalbert's Church in Wahpeton, North Dakota. The couple moved to Virginia where Francis served in the United States Air Force and Marie worked at the Headquarters Continental Army Command at Ft. Monroe, VA from 1956-1961. The couple then returned to Wahpeton, North Dakota where Francis and Marie farmed and later started the Schmidt Sewer Service. In later years Marie worked at 3-M Company and later Imation in production and supply from 1979 until her retirement in 2002. Francis died on May 30, 2002 and Marie later moved to Breckenridge, MN. In her retirement Marie volunteered at St. John's Catholic Church and St. Catherine's Living Center, both in Wahpeton, ND. She enjoyed volunteering and playing cards with the residents. Before Francis died the couple enjoyed fishing and their travels. Marie was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters and the Eagles Auxiliary. She also was a member of the Wahpeton Senior Center Kitchen Band.
Marie is survived by her son, Clyde Schmidt, West Fargo, ND and a daughter, Renee (Rollie) Ehlert, Wahpeton, ND, 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a brother, Ernest (Gloria) Ensz, Burleson, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis in 2002, a son, Robert, a brother, Arnold Gustafson and a sister Lila Peterson.
