Marian Zach, 88, Wahpeton, ND passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at CHI St. Francis Health, Breckenridge, MN. The Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, February 2, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton with Rev. Dale Lagodinski as celebrant. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM prayer vigil at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in the spring at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
Marian was born on July 4, 1927 in Breckenridge, MN one of eleven children to Adolph and Caroline (Nuebauer) Bernard. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school in LeMars Township near Fairmount, ND. Marian then moved to Wahpeton and worked at St. Mary's Hospital. She met Aly Zach before he was shipped out for service in Italy after WWII. They had a yearlong courtship by mail and when Aly returned they were engaged to be married and were united in marriage at St. Phillip's Catholic Church in Hankinson on June 24, 1948.
Aly and Marian lived in Rosholt, SD where Aly was a carpenter with his brother. They lived there until 1951 when they moved to Wahpeton and raised their seven children. They lived in the same house for 54 years until they moved into assisted living. In 1977, they purchased a home in Brownsville, TX where they spent 27 winters.
Marian was a member of St. John's Catholic Church since moving to Wahpeton, where she was in the Ladies Guild and Christian Mothers. She liked to garden, both vegetables and flowers, and also liked to crochet. She took great pride in taking care of her husband and her big family by cooking, baking and making sure her children were well kept. Marian was especially known for her apple pies and sauce.
Marian is survived by her husband, Aly Zach, Wahpeton; her children, Lucella (Jim) O'Meara, Apple Valley, MN, Audrey (Lowell) Dittberner, Parkers Prairie, MN, Kathleen (Marvin) Mahler, Sebastopol, CA, Paulette Spiker, Fargo, ND, Charlie (Shelly) Zach, Wahpeton, David Zach, Glyndon, MN; her twelve grandchildren; her eighteen great-granchildren; her son-in-law, Don Webster, Rosemount, MN; her sisters, Angeline Wieser and Theresa Schiltz, both of Rosholt, SD, Margaret Schiltz, Hankinson, ND, Julia (Clyde) Klosterman, Mooreton, ND; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Caroline Bernard; her daughter, Marietta Webster; her sisters, Marcella German, Doretta Zach, Valeria Brandenburger; her brothers, Dennis Bernard, Vincent Bernard, Kenneth Bernard; and her son-in-law, Don Spiker.
