Lucille Engebretson, 89, of Fairmount, ND passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 17, 2016 at First English Lutheran Church, Fairmount, with Rev. Anthony Ahrendt officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Affectionately called "Sis" for most of her life, Lucille was born May 16, 1927, in Hankinson, North Dakota to Charles and Charlotte Schroeder. She married Allan Engebretson on June 13, 1948. The couple raised three children and farmed in rural Fairmount until their retirement in 1986.
Lucille was a member of the Fairmount American Legion Auxiliary, the Fairmount School Board and several other civic and church organizations. She moved to Mayville in 1998 after the death of her husband. She had resided in Luther Memorial Home since 2012.
Lucille was known for her reliable sense of humor, unconditional kindness, and status as everyone's grandma. Her expert entertaining skills made her a favorite among her grandsons, nephews and nieces; she was discovered many times to be found broadcasting stories of days past—some true, some not, but always hilarious and captivating.
Her certifiably famous butterhorns were indicative of a skilled baker, and her carefully prepared cookies and meals were enjoyed by countless family and friends throughout the years.
Lucille is survived by her daughter Alana (Ray) Gerszewski; son Randy (Joan) Engebretson; grandsons Jon Fischer, Nick Fischer, Steve (Kelsey) Gerszewski, Charlie (Kelly) Gerszewski, Tim Gerszewski, Kevin Gerszewski, David Engebretson and Jason Engebretson; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter Gayle Fischer; brothers Orville, Charles, and Wilbur; sister Marilyn Bonine; grandson Mark Engebretson; and her parents.
Memorials are preferred to First English Lutheran Church of Fairmount or Fairmount Cemetery.
