Lourn H. Sund, 86, Breckenridge, MN, formerly of Fairmount, ND, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at St. Francis Healthcare Campus-Home, Breckenridge. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 5 at First English Lutheran Church, Fairmount with Rev. Anthony Ahrendt officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Avenue North), Wahpeton; also, visitation Saturday one hour prior to time of service at the church. Interment will be held at Fairmount Cemetery, Fairmount. Military Honors will be provided the Milton E. Stevenson American Legion Post No. 106, Fairmount. Arrangements are with the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
Lourn Harlan Sund was born on July 4, 1921, at Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to Henry and Lilly (Dybdal) Sund. He was baptized in 1921 and confirmed on June 9, 1935, at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wendell, Minnesota. Lourn graduated from Elbow Lake High School, Elbow Lake, MN. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) on October 31, 1940, and served until March 31, 1941. He served in the Army Air Force, as a staff sergeant as an airplane mechanic, during World War II, from June 1942 until being honorably discharged in Nov 1945, in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theaters.
On December 29, 1948, he married Audrey Grundysen at the United Lutheran Church, Fairmount. The couple lived in Fairmount and later moving south of Fairmount where they farmed for many years. His wife Audrey died on May 1, 2003. He continued to live on the farm until he entered St. Francis Home in May of 2005.
Lourn was a member of First English Lutheran Church and had been very active; member of the American Legion of Fairmount; former Sexton of Fairmount Cemetery along with being on the board. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed observing all the activities at the farm.
He is survived by his daughter, Jayne (David) Allen, Fairmount; his son, Charles (Pat) Sund, Grayslake, IL; 3 grandsons, Mitchell (Kasi) Sund, Matoon, IL, Nathan (Satina) Sund, Phoenix, AZ, Brendan Sund, Long Beach, CA; his granddaughter, Erin Sund, Chicago, IL; 2 great-granddaughters, Lauren Sund and Rochelle Sund, Phoenix, AZ; his 3 sisters, Marjorie Iverson, Fergus Falls, MN, Esther (Neil) Koebnick, Excelsior, MN, Helen Bunkowske, Helena, MT; his 3 brothers, Earl (Margaret) Sund, Fergus Falls, George (Carolyn) Sund, Fergus Falls, Russell (Gladys) Sund, Osakis, MN; his brother-in-law, Don Hanneman, Sparks, NV, daughter-in-law, Julie (Tom) Lay, Holte, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
Lourn was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Audrey; his sons, Harlan, Sept. 13, 1974, and Alan, Nov. 25, 1979; and his two sisters, Ruth Sund and Glenice Hanneman.
