Lillian was born on the family farm near Andover, SD on November 9, 1924 to Frank and Elizabeth (Schuring) Niehaus. She grew up on the farm and the family survived a tornado that destroyed it in the late 1930's. She graduated from Andover High School in 1942. After high school, she moved to Minneapolis, MN and worked for Dayton's. She eventually moved back to Bristol, SD and worked for Johnson's Grocery Store and then began working for the local bank.
While working at the bank she met a railroad man named Herbert Masching and they were united in marriage on October 16, 1950 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bristol. Herb's work took them from South Dakota, to North Dakota, Montana, Illinois, and Iowa. When they were in North Dakota, Lillian worked for Citizen's National Bank/1st National Bank in Wahpeton from 1966 to 1976. After Herb's retirement in 1987 they moved back to Wahpeton in 1988 where they spent the rest of their years. Herb passed away on February 9, 2016.
Lillian was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Christian Mother's and Catholic Daughter's. She was also a Hospice Volunteer at St. Francis and was awarded the Hospice Volunteer of the Year Award in 1995. Lillian loved when her family gathered together and spent many hours in the kitchen cooking for them, which she enjoyed. There were many new desserts that were taste tested by her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
