Leyone “Spud” Krause, 80, of Wahpeton, ND formerly Lidgerwood, ND passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, followed by his memorial service at 4:00 pm at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. Rev. Harvey Henderson will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in Elk Creek Cemetery, Wyndmere, ND. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Leyone “Spud” Krause was born on August 10, 1937 to Theodore and Ella (Rohl) Krause in rural Wyndmere, ND. He was the 10th of 11 children. Spud grew up in Wyndmere and attended Wyndmere Public School. Spud joined the Navy with his friends Darrell Nulph and Jerry Bratten when he was 17 years old. He served four years in the Navy, two of which were in Japan.
Leyone married Marleen Solberg on December 16, 1959 in Moorhead, MN. Together they made their home in Lidgerwood where they raised their six children, Loni, Brett, Rhonda, Madalee, Marni, and Kaddi. Spud was the foreman for the North Dakota Department of Transportation Lidgerwood District for 40 years and enjoyed working alongside his friends Kevin, Wally, Nate and Terry Mattson. He continued to help out when needed after his retirement. In 2012 they moved to Wahpeton.
Spud enjoyed to hunt, fish, and looked forward to his road trips with his son-in-law Terry to the casino. He had a very unique sense of humor, and shared this with his grandchildren and friends.
Spud is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marleen; children, Loni (Rick) Blilie, Brett (MJ) Krause, Madalee Milbrandt, Marni (Mike) Molby, and Kaddi Krause (Marc Buckhouse); a son-in-law, James Goettle; siblings, Carol Jean Bohlken, Vern Krause, and LaVelle Odegard; grandchildren, Miranda, Kole, Cassandra, Tyler, Shahna, Dayne, Wyn, Lacey, Austin, Daniel, Drew, Baylee and Medora; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Rhonda Krause Goettle (who shared his birthday); a grandson, Dustin; four brothers; and three sisters.
The family would to express their gratitude for the care they received from all of the staff at the VA Hospital.
