Lavola Lucy Ann Deike was born March 31, 1919 at
Clarksville
,
Iowa
, the daughter of Herman and Eleanora (Schmadeke) Deike. She lived in
Iowa
a year and then moved with her parents to the Adams Farm near
Mooreton
,
ND
. She later moved to another farm near that area where she attended Mooreton and
Great Bend
Schools
and later State School of Science at Wahpeton. She married James Walter of
Callao
,
MO
, where they lived for six months and in 1939 they moved to
Great Bend
in
Brandenburg
Township
. Two children were born to the couple, Frederick and Joann; James passed away on December 29, 1942. On June 28, 1945, Lavola married Marvin Hoeft; they had two children, Lavon and Kelvin. Lavola and Marvin and the four children lived and continued to live on the farm. Marvin passed away July 3, 1983, Lavola moved into Wahpeton in 1998 after living on the farm for 60 years. She worked for nine years at JC Penney’s and in her retirement did numerous hours of volunteer work at the Leach Home in Wahpeton and St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge. She entered St. Catherine’s
Living
Center
in 2007.
Lavola was a member of Evergreen United Methodist Church, Wahpeton and was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Great Bend, where she was active in various offices including: Cradle Roll, Little Herald, Mission Band Leader, Ladies Aid, and was a Communion Stewart. Lavola received the Wahpeton Chamber of Commerce “Extra Mile Award” in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, James Walter, her second husband, Marvin Hoeft, her grandson, Richard Meyer, granddaughter, Kay Marie Walter, great grandson, Kane Peterson, her three son-in-laws, Ronald Radke, Gerald Otto, Arven Meyer, her sister, Evelyn Deike, and her brother Lester Deike.
