Larry "Pete" Akers

Larry “Pete” Akers, 76, of Barney, ND, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.  Pete was born on February 5, 1944 in Iowa Falls, IA, to Clarence and Beatrice Akers.  He graduated high school in Dows, IA, in 1962 and then attended college for one year.

In 1964, Pete and Patricia McCord were married and had two children: Michelle and Tyler.  He later traveled to North Dakota where he met his second wife, Jean Greff.  They were wed on May 22, 1976 and were married for 44 years.  Pete and Jean had two children: Justin and Jocelyn.  The family moved to Kent, MN, in 1981 where Pete started working at MinnKota Ag.  They later settled in Barney, ND, where he retired from MinnKota after 29 years.

Pete was on the Barney City Council for five years and was also a member of the Barney Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Pete is survived by his wife, Jean; four children, Michelle (Donnie) Dingman, Johnston, IA, Tyler Akers, Des Moines, IA, Justin (Lindsey) Akers, Portland, OR, and Jocelyn (Brady) Mishler, Clive, IA; four grandchildren, Andrea (Ryan), Dalton, Olivia, and Kyra; three great-grandchildren, Jackson, Hank, and Norah; and three sisters, Mary Lou (Richard) Hess, Summer Field, FL, Karlene Dixon, Beach City, TX, and Sherry (Dave) Bastress, Kansas City, KS.

A celebration of life will be held at the Barney Bar in Barney, ND, on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 3:00 PM.  Burial will be at the Fort Dodge Cemetery, Fort Dodge, IA.
