John was born on August 5, 1930 in Greendale Township, rural Hankinson, ND to John F. and Bertha (Buck) Muehler. He was baptized in the Christian faith on August 24, 1930 and attended country school in DeVillo Township near Fairmount, ND. He was confirmed at First English Lutheran Church on May 22, 1944.
John was united in marriage to Evangeline "Eve" Braaten on June 30, 1962 at First English Lutheran Church. They farmed together and raised their three children. John farmed all of his life and lived on his current farm since 1946. He semi-retired in 1983, but continued to farm with Paul Trom until 2007. He always enjoyed the farming season and putting up hay for the livestock he always had, even to the present day. He always had a special connection with animals and seemed to always have a yearly bottle calf that he liked to take special care of and he also had his little lap dog, Puppy.
John was serving as an elder of First English Lutheran Church, a position he held for many years. He held many other positions throughout his church. He was very active including being a former Sunday School teacher. John had a very strong Christian faith in which he lovingly raised his family.
In his youth he was in 4-H and was proud of his livestock achievements. He was president of the Maids and Blades Square Dance Club and loved to square dance at least once a week. He played many hands of smear and whist. He enjoyed the bowling league and was active in the Walther League and roller skating in his younger years. He enjoyed gardening and helping Eve in her flower gardens, going to auctions, and watching the Minnesota Twins. He especially loved the time that he spent with his family and taking trips to Medora and watching the big ships come in at Duluth.
John loved life. He was an honest gentle man who always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. John would love to talk, especially on trips, with new people. He enjoyed having conversations about family and life. He always had time to visit with friends and family.
John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eve, his children, Anita Muehler, Sisseton, SD, Keith (Heather) Muehler, Fairmount, ND, Brenda (Dale Garbers) Muehler, Fairmount, ND; his grandchildren, Michael Keller, Alicia (Richard) Finnesand, Ryan Keller, Brandon Keller, and Justin Muehler, all of Sisseton, SD; his great-grandson, Carson Finnesand; and his brother Delmer (Bernadine) Muehler, Wahpeton, ND.
