John Deissler, 96, Breckenridge, MN, formerly Wahpeton, ND, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Campus, Breckenridge, MN. The Funeral Mass will be Thursday, May 10, 10:30 AM., at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Wednesday; from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 6:30 Knights of Columbus Rosary followed by a 7 PM Prayer Service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton. Arrangements are with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
John was born on April 5, 1916, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Caine) Deissler in Breckenridge. As a child he moved with his family to Wahpeton where he graduated from St. John's Catholic High School in 1932. He attended NDSSS from 1933 to 1935 where he graduated from the Electrical Engineering and Bookkeeping programs.
John started his career in the Postal Service in Wahpeton in 1936. He served in the US Navy Seabees from August of 1943 to May of 1946. He was united in marriage to Margaret Althoff on October 12, 1949 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton, ND. The couple resided in Wahpeton and raised three children, William Francis, Mary Elizabeth and James Michael. John also worked at the Gilles and Cinema Theatres as a projectionist for over 50 years.
John retired from the US Postal Service in October of 1974. He and Margaret continued to reside in Wahpeton, where John was secretary of Calvary Cemetery Association for 23 years. They entered St. Francis Nursing Home in 2007.
John was a longtime member of St. John's Catholic Church, Past Grand Knight and former State Secretary for the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, AARP, and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, yard keeping, and was an excellent fix it person around their house.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret, Breckenridge, MN, a daughter, Mary Deissler, Jamestown, ND; and a son, James (Maria) Deissler, Tucson, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, William (Bill) in 2004, and his brother, Charles Deissler.
