Herbert Masching, 89, Wahpeton, ND passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at his home under the care of his family and CHI St. Francis Health at Home Hospice. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, February 12, at 10:00 AM at St. John's Catholic Church with Rev. Dale Lagodinski as Celebrant. There will also be a Knight's of Columbus Rosary at 9:00 AM on Friday. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a Prayer Vigil at 7 PM at St. John's Catholic Church. There will also be a visitation one hour prior to the mass on Friday. Interment will be at All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Andover, SD. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to CHI St. Francis Health at Home Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
Herbert Eugene Masching was born October 28, 1926 in Adair County, Iowa to James W. and Mary (Reynolds) Masching. In December 1935 the family moved to a farm near Vesta, MN. While there Herb attended area schools through the eighth grade and then worked for area farmers.
Herb served in the US Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He then studied and received his GED certificate and attended Gale Institute, a trade school in Minneapolis, MN. After his schooling, he started his career with the Milwaukee/Soo Line Railroads for over 39 years as an Agent/Telegrapher retiring in 1987 as a Trainmaster/Agent.
On October 16, 1950 Herb was united in marriage to Lillian Niehaus in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bristol, SD. Herb's work took them from South Dakota to North Dakota, Montana, Illinois, and Iowa. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton, Eagle's Club, Knights of Columbus, and a paid up life member of the American Legion. He was also a Hospice Volunteer at St. Francis since his retirement and was awarded the Hospice Volunteer of the Year award in 1992.
Herb is survived by his wife, Lillian, Wahpeton, ND; his sons, Gary Masching, Bismarck, ND, Larry (Cindy) Masching, Wahpeton, ND; his granddaughters, Kristin (Bernie) Roggeman, Wahpeton, and Melissa Masching, Wahpeton; his great-granddaughter, Makayla Masching, Wahpeton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Masching, his brothers, George and Oliver Masching; his sister, Gertrude Dietz; and an infant son, Mark Alan Masching.
