Helen E. Leland, 85, Wahpeton, ND, died Monday, June 2, 2008, at St. Catherine?s Living Center, Wahpeton. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 7 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Morris W. Stephens, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Ave. N. ) Wahpeton; also, visitation Saturday one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
Helen E. Leland was born August 29, 1922, in Center Township, rural Wahpeton, the daughter of Herman P. and Martha K. (Stoltenow) Gast. She attended rural schools and worked at JC Penney?s in Wahpeton from 1943 to 1945. She was united in marriage to Theodore ?Ted? Leland on June 24, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. They moved to Nashua, MN and returned to the Wahpeton area in 1946 where they farmed. In 1960 Helen started to work once again for JC Penney?s where she worked until retiring in 1988. They entered the St. Catherine?s Living Center in 2007. Ted passed away April 10, 2008.
Helen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a member of LWML Aid. She enjoyed life on the farm and was an avid gardener. She also embroidered and did wallpapering and painting for area families.
Helen is survived by her two children, Leroy T. (Diane) Leland of Anthony, KS, and Martha Jo Roeder, of Wilsonville, OR; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Sarah Ann Roeder (Steve) Nelson, and daughter Mackenzie Kayla , all of Aurora, CO, Kristie Leland (Jason) Leshovsky, Moorhead, MN, Matthew J. Roeder, Wilsonville, OR; two sisters, Lucylle Olson, Killdeer, ND, Leona Ward, Wahpeton; and three sisters-in-law, Bernielle Gast, Fergus Falls, MN, Viola Carlson Gast, Breckenridge, MN, and Ina Broe, Sandwich, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ted; eight sisters and brothers, Ella Matt, Walter Gast, Herman Gast, Richard Gast, Edward Gast, Herbert Gast, Leonard Gast, and Myra Jensen.
