Harold Althoff

January 25, 1925 — September 23, 2015

Harold M. Althoff, 90, Mooreton, ND, passed away, Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family and under the care of Hospice. The Funeral Mass will be 11:30 a.m., Saturday, September 26, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton, ND. Visitation will be Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM with a rosary at 6:40 PM and a 7 PM Prayer Service also at St. Anthony's Catholic Church and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements have been entrusted with Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Harold Mathias Althoff was born on January 25, 1925, the son of Thomas M. and Anna (Poss) Althoff on the home farm north of Mooreton, ND. He grew up on his parent's dairy farm. He attended St. Anthony's Catholic School and Ibsen No. 3 Country School, graduating from the 8th grade. In December of 1950 he was drafted into the US Army. He served 2 years during the Korean War, serving as Sergeant, squad leader in the infantry. He was honorably discharged on November 19, 1952. Harold returned to Mooreton and continued dairy farming.

He was united in marriage to A. Jane Tuna, daughter of Ludvik and Martha (Janu) Tuna of Wahpeton on October 6, 1955. They were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brushville, MN. They lived on the farm north of Mooreton, where they raised four children, Michael, Norbert, Anita & Ralph. In 1979 they moved into Mooreton, where he enjoyed doing handyman jobs and yard work. He helped his kids whenever they needed help. He enjoyed farming, gopher and fox hunting fishing, woodworking, playing cards and dancing. He enjoyed watching volleyball and was "grandpa" for the Wahpeton High School volleyball team (2002-2003); he even colored his hair purple when they went to state. He enjoyed watching wrestling Monday, Thursday and Friday. He enjoyed being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren and his special buddy Orin.

Harold was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton and American Legion Post 283 for 60 years, Cass Clay DHIA, and Director of Minnesota Valley Breeders Association.

Harold is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane, Mooreton; four children: Michael (Lisa) Althoff, Wahpeton; Norbert (Ronna) Althoff, Anita (Dean) Onchuck, and Ralph Althoff, all of Mooreton; 12 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren: Kristi Althoff, Michelle (Anthony) Holm, Tom Althoff, Jim (Laura) Althoff, Toni (Chris) Jacob, Aaron (Jen) Althoff, Kayla (Kelly) Braun, Matthew (Jessica) Althoff, Justin (Naomi) Onchuck, Arnel (Danette) Onchuck, Renata (Yoney) Fobb, and Jeri (Chance) Pausch; his sister Alice Miranowski, Kent, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Anna; two brothers: Alfred and Norbert; four sisters: Catherine Lugert, Agnes Terfehr Theresa Nordick and Bernadette Rick, and his great grandson, Benjamin Althoff.
