Gilbert R. Stoltenow, 84, Breckenridge, MN, formerly of Wahpeton, ND, died Saturday, February 23, 2008, at Twin Town Villa, Breckenridge. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, ND with Rev. Anthony W. Ahrendt officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, February 25 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Avenue North), Wahpeton; also, visitation Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at the church. Interment will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton in the spring.

Gilbert Robert Herman Stoltenow was born March 12, 1923, at Great Bend, ND, to John and Lena (Gehler) Stoltenow. He received his formal education at Brandenburg Township School, rural Great Bend. He was baptized on April 1, 1923, and confirmed on April 5, 1936, all at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend. On June 24, 1943, he married Ruth P. Keenan at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Brandenburg Township until 1968 when he then worked for Breckenridge Lumber Yard until 1975. In 1974 the couple moved to Wahpeton. He worked in the maintenance department as a carpenter and locksmith at NDSCS, Wahpeton until his retirement in May of 1988. The couple moved into Twin Town Villa in the fall of 2006.
Gilbert was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a very active member including being a member of the Trinity Lutheran Men?s Club. He traveled with his wife Ruth and especially enjoyed visiting their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren - enjoying their sporting events, graduations, baptisms, confirmations, and really loved and enjoyed his family very much.
He enjoyed fishing, bowling, their place at Red Lantern Resort on Ottertail Lake, woodworking, and especially enjoyed doing woodworking and fixing at the church. He participated in his church for his love of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 64 years; his 3 daughters, Elois (Dale) Shackelford, Marietta, MN, LaRae (Marty) Danielson, Frazee, MN, Rebecca (Dave) Svobodny, Park River, ND; 7 grandchildren, Corey Bohn, Debra Houge, Jennifer Wolfgram, Nick and Tom Svobodny, Rick (Kerri) Shackelford, Terry (Laurie) Shackelford; 9 great-grandchildren, Sawyer Bohn, Austin, Jordan, Madison and Cole Houge, Rory, Kevin, Lauren, and Katie Shackelford; 1 brother, Art (Inez) Stoltenow, Litchfield, MN; and 2 sisters, Emilie Keenan, Oakes, ND and Elaine Hentz, Hankinson, ND; and many nieces and nephews.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ronald, Nov. 7, 1967; his 5 brothers, Herb, Reinhold, Elmer, Theodore, and Ernst; and his 3 sisters, Viola Klawitter, Clara Hoyem, and Doris Gutzmer.
