Gene David Ponto, 75, Wahpeton, ND, died Saturday, February 2, 2008, at his residence in Wahpeton. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 7 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Ave. N.) Wahpeton with Rev. Morris Stephens officiating. A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 8 at St. John Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, ND with Rev. Michael E. Kessler officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Osman-Lane VFW Post No. 4172 and Lynn-Spiering American Legion Post No. 4 both of Hillsboro. Inurnment will be in the spring at Hillsboro, ND. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gene was born in Traill County, rural Hillsboro, ND. He was baptized on October 16, 1932 and confirmed on April 4, 1947. After working on the family farm he served in the Army in the 11th airborne division. He retired from Wahpeton Canvas Company, Wahpeton, in September 1997 and from Tri-State Aviation, Wahpeton, in October 2007.
Gene had a great love for aviation. He had his pilots license and spent much of his time riding in and jumping out of, or being around aircraft.
He is survived by his two sons; Todd and his wife Laura, and their children Treyton, and Ella, of Red Wing, MN; Troy and his wife Susie, and their children Jordan, Alexander, with Isabelle, expected to join us in May, all of Mebane, NC; his sister Mavis ( Clyde) Ahlschwede of Fargo, ND; his brother, Paul Ponto of Jamestown, ND; his brother-in-law, Nils Buringrud of Fargo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Truman Ponto; and his sister, Elaine Buringsrud.
