Fern Anderson

Fern Anderson, 99, of Breckenridge, MN, formerly rural Geneseo, ND passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 in Breckenridge.  Visitation will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018 from 10-11 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11 AM at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND.  Reverend Erika Buller will officiate.  Burial will take place at Bergen Cemetery, Lidgerwood, ND at a later date.  Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Fern Alvina Freeman was born on April 1, 1918 on the family farm near Geneseo, ND to Henry and Mary (Kotchian) Freeman.  She grew up near Geneseo and was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church.  Fern attended country school before graduating from Geneseo High School in 1936 as valedictorian.  After high school, she attended Valley City Teachers College in Valley City, ND.  She later taught in Wales, ND, Marboe Township, ND, and Veblen, SD.

Fern married Edwin Anderson on June 19, 1942 at Bergen Lutheran Church.  They made their home on the Anderson family farm where they raised their family.  Fern and Edwin farmed together for over 60 years.  In 2003 they moved to Wahpeton, ND.

Fern’s faith was very important to her.  She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Federation; was involved in ladies aid; teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School; and quilting projects.  She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, and showing her hospitality in any way she could.  She was an avid letter writer.

Fern is survived by two daughters, Carol Anderson, Warren, MN and Nancy (Paul Marshall) Schmitz, Troy, MI; granddaughter, Abigail (Erik) Sauro; and great-granddaughters, Kennedy and Blaire Sauro.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Edwin; her parents, Henry and Mary Freeman; her sister, Geraldine Brown; and her brother, Loren Freeman.
