Dr. Walter Helland, DDS, 95, Breckenridge, MN, formerly of Wahpeton, ND passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus. Funeral mass will be on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton with Rev. Dale Lagodinski as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Walter Helland was born on March 11, 1917 in Griggs County, North Dakota near Binford, the son of Arndt and Martha Helland. He attended country school and graduated from Binford High School in 1934. He attended NDSCS in Wahpeton as a Pre-Dental student.
He married Sybilla Kline of Wahpeton on April 20, 1938 at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton. Walter attended Marquette Dental School and the couple lived in Milwaukee, while Walter continued working on farms in the summer. He graduated from Marquette in 1942 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree. He was granted a commission in the Army Dental Corps in 1943. In 1945, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. The couple returned to Wahpeton where Walter joined Dr. George Murray and practiced dentistry in Wahpeton for thirty years.
Walter and Sybilla spent their winters in retirement at Brownsville, TX. He served as president of the retirement parks senior citizens group for two terms where he helped host all the retirement parks in the city of Brownsville on several occasions. They entered St. Francis Nursing Home in January 2006.
Walter was a long time member of St. John's Catholic Church where he was active in parish activities, including St. John's School. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he received the "Family of The Year" and "Outstanding Knight of the Year" from Council #2205 and served as Treasurer for 18 years. He will be remembered for his part in the community Passion Play, Golgatha, which was presented in 1951, 52 and 53, with eight performances during Holy Week.
Walter is survived by his wife, Sybilla, Breckenridge, MN; his son, Tom (Mary) Helland, Wahpeton, ND; his daughter, Mary Helland, New York; his grandchildren, Jeremy (Ashley) Helland, Wahpeton, ND, Samantha Helland, Wahpeton, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson, Casey Helland, and his ten siblings.
