Diane Faye Carlson

Diane Carlson, 77, of Wahpeton, North Dakota, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2024, surrounded by her family under the care of CHI Hospice. Her service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton.  There will be a visitation one hour prior.  Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.   Colette Barton will be officiating the service.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Diane Faye Carlson was born December 5, 1946, in Hankinson, ND, to Bernard and Bette (Meyer) Hinrichs. She grew up on the family farm north of Lidgerwood, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood and achieved her High School diploma at Lidgerwood High. 

 After graduation, she moved to Minneapolis and worked in the Sears Warehouse. She met her future husband, Herbert Carlson, through a mutual friend in Atwater, MN. On February 27, 1965, they were united in marriage at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood. They made their family home in Wahpeton, ND, where they raised their two children. Diane was a homemaker and full-time mom while her children were young. She then worked at Wahpeton Canvas and Primewood for many years where her employer raved about her work ethic. 

 Diane had a kind, gentle manner. Her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids were the joy of her life and she loved, supported, and cared for each of them unconditionally.  She had a particularly strong bond with her mother and the two had near daily contact throughout her mother’s life. Diane was an avid reader. She enjoyed movies, soap operas, and quiet time at home with her dog(s) and Herb. Diane and Herb were truly two halves of a whole, with her doing the coordinating, paperwork, and detail management, and Herb taking on the role of caretaker, errand runner, and comic relief in later years. 

 Diane will be sorely missed by surviving family members: husband, Herb Carlson; son, Allen Carlson; and daughter Angie (Scott) Rortvedt; grandchildren: David (Katarina) Carlson, Brianna (Kyle) Swanson, and Carley Rortvedt (fiancée Bennett Rindy); great-grandchildren: Tristen Carlson, Ava Carlson, Charles Carlson, and Eliza Swanson; brother, Rick (Barb) Hinrichs; several aunts and cousins as well as nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents.
