David W. Matejcek, 56, rural Wahpeton, ND, passed away early Monday morning, May 26, 2014 at his home under the care of Riveredge Hospice. The Funeral Mass will be Friday, 2:00 PM, at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Thursday, from 5 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Vigil, followed by a Knight of Columbus Rosary, and one hour before the service, all at St. John's Catholic Church. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, have been entrusted with the arrangements.
Dave was born October 13, 1957, the son of Wilbur F. and Marian (Schirmers) Matejcek. He grew up on the family farm and attended St. John's Catholic Elementary School in Wahpeton. During the summer when Dave was in high school he custom combined with the Don and Margaret Pausch family. He graduated from Wahpeton Senior High School in 1975, after that he and his brother Mike formed Matejcek Custom Combining and continued with the partnership until present. Dave was united in marriage to Tami Gilles on May 19, 1979, at St. John's Catholic Church, the couple continued to live in rural Wahpeton. Dave was a dedicated worker and continued to combine during the last fourteen summers when he suffered from cancer, including working the summer of 2013.
Dave (fondly known as Homer) was a lifetime member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a Summit Township Supervisor for the last ten years. Dave has taught his children his hard work ethics and ability to fight through adversity. He and his sons were able to share a passion for aviation in building a homebuilt aircraft together which they have since put over 200 hours of flight time on, as well as building and flying countless radio controlled aircraft.
Dave is survived by his wife of 35 years, Tami, rural Wahpeton; two sons and a daughter: Nick (Nicole) Matejcek Wahpeton; Dan Matejcek (Kailee), Bemidji, MN; Brandi Kay Matejcek, Wahpeton; two grandchildren: Hayden Nicole and Parker David; his step-mother, Rosella Matejcek, Wahpeton; four brothers and two sisters: Michael (Kathryn) Matejcek, Robert (Cynthia) Matejcek, Mark (Geralyn) Matejcek, John (Lori) Matejcek, Jean Matejcek, all of Wahpeton and Kathleen Matejcek, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marian, his father Wilbur, May 26, 2014, an infant sister, Linda, and his father-in-law, Tony Gilles.
