Darrell Gast of Wahpeton, passed away peacefully Monday, April 16 at the St. Francis Healthcare Campus surrounded by his loving family. He went to the Lord after a long struggle with liver disease. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton, ND with Rev. Dale F. Lagodinski officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton, ND.

He was born in Wahpeton, ND to Herbert and Alice (Thiel) Gast September 9th, 1936. After a cross country motorcycle trip at the age of 16, he came back to Wahpeton to begin working with his father at their construction company, Gast Construction.

Darrell married Marlene Strom on November 19th, 1955 in Wahpeton, where they lived and raised three children. Darrell continued to work in the construction industry for 60 years building his business. As the company grew, his two sons went into business with him and they eventually expanded the business in Wahpeton and Fargo.

For decades, he enjoyed a special annual ritual where he and his best friends, in manly fashion, would set off on a hunting trip to Montana. His trips were filled with adventures that always provided great stories.

Over the years, he enjoyed watching his family grow. He was proud of his children, and especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their sporting events, encouraging them in all their endeavors and watching the oldest ones graduate from high school and college.

He loved spending his winters in Mesa, Arizona and his summer weekends at Ottertail Lake. There is nothing he enjoyed more than when he was surrounded by family at the lake and everyone had a grandpa-assigned project. Darrell had a good heart and those who knew him always enjoyed not only his advice, but his friendship and laughter.

Darrell was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton. He was active in the community, belonging to several organizations.

Surviving Darrell is his devoted wife of 56 years Marlene, Wahpeton; his three children: Darby (David) Casper, Wahpeton; Tim (Therese) Gast, Breckenridge, MN; and Jim (Melanie) Gast, West Fargo; six grandchildren: Jon, Matt, Michael, Mason, Mollie, and Carson; great-grandchildren Jackson and Bentley; two sisters, Ila Leinen, Wahpeton; Janelle (Roger) Ehrman, Arvada, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

Darrell is preceded in death by parents, Herb and Alice, his sister Sharon Wateland and husband Kermit, and his brother-in-law Ray Leinen.

Memorials are preferred to St. John's Catholic Church or School.
