Darrel Hendrickson, 83, Fargo, ND, formerly of Colfax, ND passed away on Friday, February 26, 2016 at ManorCare in Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, March 2, at 11:00 AM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Colfax, ND with Rev. Dan Forsberg officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, ND. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Our Savior's Parish Nurse Program. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
Darrel was born on September 11, 1932 in Breckenridge, MN to Palmer Gylland and Berget "Betty" Hendrickson-Gylland. In 1940 he moved with his mother to Minneapolis, MN where he attended school until they moved back to the farm near Colfax, ND in 1946. He continued his education at Nansen Country School #1 until the eighth grade and then he attended Wahpeton High School where he graduated in 1951.
Darrel then became a very dedicated farmer with his mother and was known to have some of the best looking fields around and kept them well tilled (pulling weeds by hand many times). This hard work earned them a Soil Conservation Award from the State of North Dakota in 1984. They farmed until 1998 and had an auction on September 9, 1999 and they continued to live on the farm after retiring. Starting in 1978, Darrel and his mother spent their winters in Brownsville, TX and later Mission, TX. Betty passed away on November 14, 2000 and Darrel continued to live on the farm and go to Texas until his Parkinson's disease needed special attention and took him to ManorCare in Fargo, ND in 2011.
Darrel was a lifetime member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where he held many church offices and was a board member. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway Lodge 4-037 Balder since 1972. Darrel played baseball in his youth, was part of a bowling league in Fargo, and was an avid golfer. His time in Texas gave him a lot of time to golf and he even scored a hole in one! Darrel also enjoyed the many times that he went fishing in Canada with his cousins over the years.
Darrel is survived by many cousins, and is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Hendrickson.
