Curtis Bohn

August 11, 1960 — January 3, 2025

Curtis Elroy Bohn, 64, of Altoona, IA (formerly of Hastings, MN) passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Curt was born August 11, 1960, in Breckenridge, MN to Harold and Marcella (Math) Bohn. He was baptized and attended Grace Lutheran Church growing up. Curt learned the value of hard work starting at a young age delivering newspapers every morning. Throughout high school, you could find Curt in the garage on Saturdays with his dad and brother Lynn working on and sharing the love of cars. He also created fond memories while working with friends at Piggly Wiggly. In 1978, Curt graduated from Breckenridge High School and then obtained his electrician’s degree from North Dakota State School of Science in 1980. In 1982, he shared the birth of his daughter Jessica with then-wife, Kathy Johnson.

Curt worked in Wahpeton, ND until 1983, then moved to Fargo after meeting his life-long companion and future wife, Deanna Smedberg. They were married on July 13, 1985, in Fargo. In 1987, Curt took a one-day trip to the Twin Cities to seek more job stability in the electrical field. He was hired on the spot with Miller Electric in Hastings, MN, where he worked for over 30 years. In 1991, Curt and Deanna shared the birth of their daughter, Ashlee. They moved to Altoona, IA in December 2021 to be closer to their grandchildren.

Curt continued enjoying his love of cars into adulthood, especially his 1973 Dodge Challenger. He enjoyed taking the car to the Hastings car shows and showing it off at the classic car shows at the MN State Fairgrounds. He also spent his time keeping meticulously clean cars and a pristine lawn. He stayed active playing volleyball, running, golf, and poker with his best friends in Hastings. During Curt’s downtime, his beloved dog Duster (Mopar name) was always by his side watching car shows, football, going for walks, or driving around town.

Around 2018, Curt started having cognitive and comprehension issues. In 2022, he was officially diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia. Until October 2024, Deanna stayed at home to be his caregiver, then moved him to memory care in Altoona. On December 7, Curt had an incident at memory care where he was then taken to the hospital. After a month-long illness, Curt passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

Curt is survived by his wife Deanna, mother Marcella, two brothers, Terry (Mary Jo Dailey) of Mandan, ND, and Kelly of Coon Rapids, MN, daughter Jessica Gallaher (Jason) of Wahpeton, ND, daughter Ashlee Ullestad (Luke) of Bondurant, IA, grandchildren Leland Levery, Parker, Greyson, and Brooklyn Ullestad, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Harold and brother Lynn.
