Carol Sturdevant

March 16, 1943 — April 25, 2023

Carol Sturdevant, a beloved member of the Wahpeton, North Dakota community, passed away on April 25, 2023, at the age of 80. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 1, 2023, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm followed by her funeral service at 1:00 pm, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton, ND.  Pastor Tom Peterson will officiate the service.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

She was born in Fargo on March 16, 1943, to Clarence and Ruth Simmons Twedt and spent her childhood living on a hobby farm along the Sheyenne River with her older sister Betty.

Attending Riverside one-room schoolhouse for two years before transferring to Kindred School, Carol later graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1961, where she was proud to have been a cheerleader for four years and crowned homecoming queen. Furthering her education led Carol to attend North Dakota State College of Science where she continued with cheerleading for two years.

On June 27, 1964, Carol married her high school sweetheart, Terry Sturdevant and the couple settled in Fargo. During her time there, Carol worked at Federal Crop Insurance and the Fargo VA. Upon Terry's completion of his senior year and football season at North Dakota State University, they moved to Wahpeton where Carol spent a decade working in the business office at North Dakota State School of Science. Once Jay and Jill came into their lives, she became a devoted stay-at-home mother.

Throughout her life, Carol found immense joy in spending time with her loved ones which included many summer weekends to Ottertail Lake in Minnesota, vacations to Clearwater Beach Florida and following Bison Football.  She loved planting flowers in the spring and feeding the birds all year long.  

Carol also made a lasting impact on the Wahpeton community devoting much time as an active member of Bethel Church-Circle #1 serving as a Sunday School Teacher while additionally serving on the Board of Outreach. She participated actively in Women’s Literary Club serving as president for two years; additionally, she volunteered her time to Friends of the Library, the WHS Senior Tea, WHS class of 1961 reunions among other activities.  Her service to the community continued as she also worked as an election worker and blood drive volunteer caller. 

She is survived by her husband Terry Sturdevant; son, Jay Sturdevant and wife Christina, Jay’s children Skyler, Sydney, Everest, Nathaniel and step stepchildren Emony Roberts (Ellwanger), Briar Crenshaw, and Kieran Crenshaw; daughter, Jill Sturdevant Dornfeld and husband Don Dornfeld along with their children Madeline and Callie; and sister, Betty Anderson.

Carol was preceded in death by her father Clarence and mother Ruth.

Carol will always be remembered by her family and friends as a kind, dedicated, and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. May she rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
