Beatrice “Betty Kummer, 88, Fargo, ND, formerly Colfax, ND, died Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at the Elim Home, Fargo. Her Celebration of Life will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, October 11, at Zion United Methodist Church, rural Walcott, ND, with Rev. John Bergh officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, from 3 PM to 6 PM with a 5 PM prayer service at the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church on Sunday. Interment will be at Zion United Methodist Cemetery.
Betty was born July 13, 1921, at Colfax, ND, the daughter of George and Susie (Towne) Ista. She attended rural school near the Zion Church and graduated from high school at Colfax. Betty continued her education at Ellendale State Normal School, graduating with a Life Certificate in Teaching. She taught in several schools in Richland County and was Principal of the Galchutt School. Betty married Bob Hoffert, who later passed away in an automobile accident. On August 26, 1949 she married Raymond A. Kummer. They lived and farmed in Nansen Township, where they lived for 24 years. In 1974 they moved into Colfax, where they spent winters in Mesa, Ariz.; and summers in Colfax. Raymond died June 23, 1999 and Betty moved into Fargo in 2000. Betty remained active, spending winters in Arizona. She entered the Elim Home in July of 2009.
Betty was an active member of the Zion United Methodist Church, and was involved in her communities of Colfax, Wahpeton and Richland County. Playing cards with friends and relatives was a wonderful pastime for Betty as well as playing golf and watching golf. She was involved in Democratic politics on all levels in North Dakota and served on the North Dakota Library Board.
Betty is survived by her three children: Jim Kummer, St. Louis Park, MN; Joan Carlson, Fargo; Paul (Vanessa) Kummer, Colfax, ND; 8 grandchildren: Michael (Mary) Kummer, Boise, ID; Brent (Jennifer) Kummer, Victoria, MN;; Kenneth (Michelle) Useldinger, Grand Forks, ND; KyleeAnn (Richard) Stevens, Arlington, VA; Dawn (Brian) Kieselbach, Barnesville, MN; Heather (Jeff) Allickson, Fargo; Blaine (Megan) Kummer, Colfax; and Rachael Kummer, Denver, CO; three great grandchildren: Elizabeth Kummer, Taylor Allickson and Jake Useldinger; her two brothers, George (Agnes) Ista, Colfax, ND; Richard (Diane) Ista, Ada, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob Hoffert and her husband Ray Kummer, her three sisters: Myrtle Dermean, Tessabel Sampson and Maxine Hoffert.
