Arvid J. Olson, 86, Wahpeton, ND, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family while under the care of Red River Valley Hospice. A Memorial Service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton. Military Honors will be conducted by North Dakota Military Honors and Wahpeton Military Unit. Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Arvid was born May 13, 1929, the son of Ole A. and Caroline (Strandell) Olson in Clearbrook, MN. Arvid attended country school near Lengby, MN, before moving with his mother to Montana for several years. He graduated from Crookston, MN high school and worked in Crookston. Arvid was united in marriage to Norma Strand on July 2, 1950 in Mentor, MN. He served in the Armed Forces (27 years), and returned to school at NDSCS in Auto Mechanics. After working in his field he was hired by NDSCS as an instructor for several years before teaching machine tooling at NDSU. He obtained his B.S.E. in Vocational Education at Southern State College, Springfield, SD in 1970, and returned to NDSCS where he taught machine tooling and welding until retiring in 1993.
Arvid stayed active in retirement, repairing many items for neighbors in his well-equipped garage. He was very involved in several of the local Lions Club organizations. He will be remembered for his volunteer service, his quick-witted one-liners and making and selling mini donuts at various activities throughout the area. He also volunteered many hours at the Chahinkapa Zoo Carousel and was known to visit and associate with everyone wherever he went.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Norma, Wahpeton; two children: Perry (Judy) Olson, rural Wyndmere, ND; and Sara (Greg Hasbargen) Olson, Fargo, ND; six grandchildren: Kelly Olson (Dani), Kate Olson, Brittany (Wyatt) Hanson, Alexander Hasbargen, Cassandra Rust, Dylan Cayler; three step grandchildren: Jeremy (Stephanie), and Nicholas (April) Swanson, Amanda (Tyler) Schultz; one great grandchild and six step great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and great granddaughter Faith Hanson.
