Allan O. Forness, 84, Fargo, ND, formerly Colfax, ND, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014 at Manorcare in Fargo. The Funeral Service will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Colfax, ND. Visitation will be Friday, from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, Colfax, ND. Military Honors by the Hagen-Helgeson American legion Post No. 166-Walcott, ND. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Allan was born April 25, 1929, on a farm west of Colfax, ND, the son of Oscar and Inga (Wollan) Forness. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1947, and farmed with his father until he entered the US Army and served in Korea. After being honorably discharged, Allan returned to Colfax to farm. In 1954 he married Phyllis (Nelson) Gold. He started his own construction business in 1965, retiring in 1998. The couple spent 11 winters in Harlingen, TX; spending summers at South Turtle Lake, MN. They sold the farmstead in 2012 and moved to Fargo in One Oak Place.
Allan was a member of the Walcott American Legion and was involved with the Gideon's. He loved to garden, raising all types of vegetables, raspberries, and flowers. He received great joy sharing all that he produced. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, playing cards and helping his neighbor's farm. He was most interested in his family; spending time with them including fishing and making the annual deer hunt with Mark, Joel, Ron and Seth.
Allan is survived by his wife, Phyllis Forness, Fargo, ND; two sons and two daughters, Mark (Sue) Forness, West Fargo, ND; Joel (Rebecca) Forness, Abercrombie, ND; Lisa (Randy) Monson, Christine, ND; Paula Hoyt, Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren: Tricia (David) Johnson, Rachel Bruflat, Kristi (Eric) Swenson, Seth (Brittany) Forness, Emily (Sam) Nash, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Forness, Stefanie Forness, Austin (Michelle) Monson, and Jasmine (Nick) Paczkowski; 15 great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol Browne, Dana Pt. CA; his daughter-in-law, Andrea Forness, Florida; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Forness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Terry, his sister, Charlotte Burns, two brothers, Gerald and Ronald.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Gideon's, Great Plains Food Bank or Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery
