Jim Bartnick

May 28, 1949 — January 28, 2014

Jim Bartnick, 64, Wahpeton, ND, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND. The Funeral Service will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Friday, from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Jim was born on May 28, 1949 to Orville and Ruby (Ostby) Bartnick in Veblen, SD. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Claire City, SD and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lidgerwood, ND. He attended school in rural Claire City and graduated from New Effington High School in 1967.

Jim joined the US Navy in March of 1969, training in San Diego and proudly served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger during the Vietnam War. The highlight of his tour was attending the Bob Hope Christmas show in 1969. He was honorably discharged in January of 1971.

Jim was united in marriage to Linda Rae Stibal at Immanuel Lutheran Church on May 31, 1969. After his discharge he began working for many farmers in the area and finally settled in Wahpeton where he was a livestock buyer for Armour and Swift Meat Packers. When the buying station closed he went back to his first love, farming. To him there was nothing better than sitting in a tractor digging and inhaling the scent of fresh turned dirt.

After he was disabled, he began his second passion of fishing. He spent hours on the lake looking for the elusive "Big" walleye. Jim had the "gift of gab" telling jokes and keeping on for hours, literally. In five minutes he could find out more about a person than most people would in a day. He was however, speechless this Christmas. He was very patriotic and proud of the military. His nephew, Sgt Michael Jorheim presented him a flag flown over Guantanamo Bay on his birthday and the picture of him and Mike was incredible.

His other hobbies included camping, snowmobiling, shopping on Ebay, and restoring his father's 1954 Farmall Super MTA tractor. He was a member of the Wahpeton VFW Post No. 4324. Jim was very proud of his children and spouses and their accomplishments, but the light of his life were his grandchildren and little "Weiner dogs". He had many dear friends, some of whom he will now meet again in Heaven and here on earth, God bless them all.

He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Linda, Wahpeton; his children, Bryan Bartnick, Bismarck, ND, Michelle (Chris) Hans, Fargo, ND, Derek (Amanda) Bartnick, Wahpeton, ND; his grandchildren, Brady and Katelyn Bartnick, Rylee Hans, Leigh, Olivia, and Elsa Bartnick; his mother, Ruby Bartnick, Wahpeton, ND; his brother, Paul (Diane) Bartnick, New Effington, SD.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orville Bartnick, his grandparents, and a grandson, Drake Hans.
